Community and Identity

The key to understanding the past is to consider the lived experience of our ancestors; by thinking about their interactions with those around them, and how they viewed themselves, we are able to build a picture of a particular society or time. With this in mind, the Aberystwyth Early Modern conference aims to host a discussion looking at the relationships between communal and individual identity within a variety of contexts in order to draw comparisons across Europe and the Globe.

Topics of Interest include:

• Geography and Networks
• Urban spaces
• Central and regional authority
• Material culture

The Aberystwyth Early Modern Conference is an interdisciplinary event aimed at postgraduate students and early career researchers, with the aim of providing a platform for networking and experience in giving papers. Submissions are encouraged from any discipline as long as your abstract relates to at least one of our core topics, and the period of c.1400-1800.

Proposal word count: 300 maximum.

Panels will consist of 3 x 20 minute papers, with individual submissions being placed with related topics. After all papers have been given in a panel there will then be a 30 minute Questions and Answers time for the speakers.

Deadline for submissions: 1st March 2020

Submissions can take the form of single papers, panels or posters and should be sent to earlymodernaber@gmail.com.
