About International Gathering 2019

We at Sabeel Jerusalem with our local partners will be hosting the first International Gathering of its kind to encourage interfaith and inter-religious dialogue to begin and continue conversations of justice, peace, and reconciliation. We will have field visits, worship, cultural events, workshops, and local speakers will share about current realities in Palestine and Israel with a special focus on the theological responses of the Palestinian Christians. The Gathering will be a mixture of locals and international theologians, activists, and people with an interest in human rights.

Topics

Ecumenism, Indigenous knowledge, Indigenous traditions, Peace/conflict management, Religious diversity, Interreligious dialogue, Interfaith, Interfaith dialogue and education, Israel, Liberation theology, Palestine

Call for Papers

It is said that theology is like a cross which vertically leads humanity to God, and horizontally leads us to our neighbor. For Palestinian Christians, this link was damaged during the Nakba. Unable to go back to our former theological thinking while struggling to find a way forward. Whether it was Western feelings of guilt, the theology of Christian literalists, or the ideology of Zionism, the bible was used to grant approval to the tragedy of the Palestinian people. This is the Faith Nakba, from which various Palestinian Christian theologies have sprung.

We at Sabeel believe it is now time to celebrate these theologies, the answers they provide, and the questions they raise; and to gather to recommit ourselves to keep on the struggle until justice, liberation, and peace are realized. To achieve this, we will be including presentations on the current situation, workshops with local NGOs on what they are accomplishing, non-violence, Kumi, and cultural history of Palestine. These events will be followed by discussion and debrief.
