The treatment of Gastrointestinal diseases continue to change due to the development of new strategies that can include lifestyle modifications and the arrival of new medications. In the case of inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), new medications are changing ways of treating the illness, and managing complications of IBD. In peptic ulcer disease resistance of H. pylori to popular antibiotics requires change in practice and diagnosis. The chronic use of PPIs have been questioned due to possible side effects, resulting in stressing the use of other methods and medications in the treatment of GERD. Barrett's Esophagus and its surveillance and treatment continue to change. The different types of IBS have new recommendations for lifestyle changes as well as new medications that can help in IBS management of both the constipation and diarrhea forms.

The medications and treatments of some of the chronic Gastrointestinal conditions result in side effects that the general physician needs to be aware of to help the specialists maintain proper vaccination, prevent dietary deficiencies, osteoporosis, skin abnormalities and malignancies that may rarely occur; but need to be screened for.

The Hepatology program provides a comprehensive update for health care providers in the diagnosis and multidisciplinary approaches to management of commonly encountered problems in chronic liver disease.
