About GCRE 2019
Hosted annually at Yale University, the Graduate Conference in Religion and Ecology is a space for students to engage in dynamic, interdisciplinary conversations across curricular boundaries. As an international conference, we host students from the fields of Environmental Studies, Environmental Humanities, Forestry, Conservation, History, Social Sciences, Food Studies, Philosophy, Ethics, Theology, Religious Studies, Law & Policy, and Animal Ethics, among others. We strongly encourage interdisciplinary work across these topics to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of this conference. Our presenters range from undergraduate students to PhD candidates, and even include recent graduates who are implementing this academic research in the workplace.

Exploring Energy: Graduate Conference in Religion and Ecology

It is a pleasure to invite you to the third annual Graduate Conference in Religion and Ecology at Yale University. Exploring Energy, the theme of this year’s conference, partners with the yearlong 2018-19 initiative sponsored by Yale Environmental Humanities to explore the intersection of energy with human culture. We particularly invite proposals on the conference theme in addition to welcoming presentations on other topics related to the fields of environmental and moral dialogue.
We encourage applications from those in the fields of Public Health, Industrial Ecology, Religious Studies, Law & Policy, Food Studies, Philosophy, History, Conservation, Gender Studies, Art History, and from other fields whose work orbits this year’s conference topic. In addition hosting academic conversations on these themes through traditional conference papers, we also invite creative projects and presentations to constitute this year’s program. In seeking to assemble a diverse symposium of rising scholars, we especially encourage students from minority backgrounds to apply. We also encourage interdisciplinary work across these topics to reflect the interdisciplinary aims of this conference.
Topics of Interest:
How energy sources (such as coal, fire, wind, etc.) intersect with religious entities, spiritual practices, and environmental stewardship
Food as an energy source or facilitator of energy transfer, the relationship of specific energy resources to food production, or food as a symbol of eco-theological boundaries
Understandings of how planetary, ecosystem, and human health negotiate energy transfers in relation to ecological sustainability and/or spiritual worldviews
Art as medium and mediator of energy, e.g. visual portrayals of human dependence on natural resources, creative engagement with byproducts of energy production (pollution, waste, etc.), or the aesthetic treatment of coal mines, fuelwood harvesting, oil extraction, wind power, solar energy, etc.
